The pupils were asked to write a brief News Report based on the events from the first four chapters of Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Ms Carey's Class - Group Essay

My lovely 2E English class have just finished reading & studying John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice & Men”. We had discussed on many occasions the theme of loneliness in the novel & how all characters are affected. I divided the class up into groups where they had to plan a paragraph for homework on a particular character or aspect of the novel and how loneliness is depicted.

Each group had to perfect their paragraph, selecting the best points each group member had come up with. Finally they put forward their best combined effort. These paragraphs were presented to the class and together they are a thorough account of this important theme. Hopefully this piece of work will be a helpful tool for revision before the Christmas exams and beyond.

Lord of the Flies: Fakebook

Today I started a Fakebook account, based on The Lord of the Flies, from the fantastic Classtools.Net with my Second Year English class. We are hoping to learn more about the novel and particularly the characters by posting from their different perspectives throughout the novel.We're also hoping to use the Fakebook account as a way of storing creative writing, homework and oral language tasks throughout the novel. Feel free to pop back every now and then and see how the class are getting along.

Mr Doyle's Class: 1V World Book Day Class Magazine

Introducing 1V’s contribution to this year’s World Book Day activities.  V.I.P. magazine is an exciting new publications written and designed (and named) by 1V.  The magazine, like the class, is bursting with colour, information, imagination, humour and above all Confidence.  Have a read through and experience the world of a V.I.P. !

Julius Caesar: J.C. Wordle Collection

This week I asked my Third Year pupils to create a Wordle on Julius Caesar based on what they thought were the key terms in the play. They could pick any theme, character, moment or word that they learnt during their study of the play. I asked the pupils to first write the terms they thought were important into their copies. Once that was done, they had to review the terms and assign each one a numerical value. The term they thought was most important was to have the highest value. By entering that term the most into the Wordle box, that would result in it being visually clear which term they thought was most important. Pupils continued entering terms backwards from this value resulting in the examples below.

Ms Kelly's Class: Poetry Presentations Series

Ms.Kelly’s second year English class have recently been working on unseen poetry. The students worked together to create engaging presentations for their peers on different poems. Students annotated the poems using the STTIFF method. (Subject matter, Theme, Tone, Imagery, Form and Feeling). Over the coming weeks we will be sharing their fantastic work. The second collection in this short series comes from a group of pupils (Caeleen, Lauren, Ellen, Kate, Aine, Aoife, Kate H) and their take on Merrill Glass' But You Didn't. We hope you enjoy!

Ms. R Kelly's second year English class have been looking at the graphic imagery created by Wilfred Owen, in his poem Dulce et Decorum Est. Pic Collage is a very useful app. It is free to download and can be used for a variety of subjects. Take a look at some of these creations:

In my third year class this week we've been looking at some aspects of fictional writing. The key concepts that we have been particularly looking at were:

1. Conflict
2. Denouement
3. Freeze Frame

To finish the section we decided to make a short stop motion video. We used Lego Movie Maker for iPad to make the video. The controls were really simple to use and it has a feature to directly upload to YouTube. I think we'll definitely be using it again for other projects during the year.  Here it is!

Molly answered:

Conflict is seen in the stop motion when the two drivers step out of their cars after the crash happens. The two cars collide and both drivers emerge from their cars to confront each other. The driver who was the 'victim' in this case becomes infuriated and reacts to the whole situation by punching the driver who caused the accident. This was probably the worst thing the driver could have done because instead of having the police solve the issue, and have the driver at fault given the correct punishment, the innocent driver is now punished because of how she reacted to the whole situation. She ends up in jail even though this whole incident wasn't her fault.

Denouement is seen in the stop motion when the two drivers receive their punishments. The outcomes of this event are not what I would have originally thought.The driver who caused the accident seems to have been left off easily compared to the innocent driver, who ends up in jail because she punched the other woman. We don't exactly see what happens to the driver at fault but I'm assuming it's not half as bad as what the initially impeccant driver received.
